Creating a Serene Desert Modern Escape in Southern Utah
Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to design a breathtaking vacation home for a wonderful client in St. George, Utah. Nestled amid the stunning red rock formations and expansive desert landscape, this home was all about reflecting the natural beauty of the area while offering a peaceful retreat.
Designing this project was a dream come true for me. I wanted to merge modern desert design with the cozy charm of a vacation home, creating a space where my client could relax, host loved ones, and fully enjoy the serene environment of St. George.
The Vision
My goal for the St. George vacation home was to seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living. Drawing inspiration from the desert’s natural hues, I focused on earthy tones, organic textures, and materials that complement the surrounding landscape while creating a haven of relaxation.
I aimed to design a home that felt both luxurious and welcoming—a place where family and friends could feel completely at ease while enjoying a high-end vacation experience. Balancing comfort and elegance was central to my design approach.
Designing the Space
Living Room: A Welcoming Oasis
The living room is the heart of any vacation home, and I wanted this space to exude warmth and comfort. I used a neutral color palette, featuring soft beige and sandy tones that mirror the desert landscape. Large windows invite natural light, highlighting the stunning views while keeping the space airy and light. Not to mention they give a great view of the backyard pool!
I chose plush, oversized sofas adorned with cozy throw blankets and textured pillows to create a luxurious yet laid-back atmosphere. A natural stone fireplace serves as the focal point, adding both warmth and a touch of rustic lux to the modern design.
Desert Modern Kitchen
Blending Functionality with Style
The open-concept kitchen was designed to be both functional and stylish—ideal for preparing meals or entertaining guests. I selected natural wood cabinetry paired with sleek stone countertops, achieving a sophisticated yet organic look. The large kitchen island became a central feature, perfect for gathering and meal prep, with chic barstools adding a touch of elegance.
To keep the space connected to the desert surroundings, I incorporated natural elements like wood, stone, and metal, creating warmth and texture while maintaining a cohesive design throughout the kitchen, dining, and living areas.
Bedrooms
Cozy Retreats with a View
Creating restful retreats in the bedrooms was a key focus. I incorporated soft bedding, layered textures, and natural materials like linen. Large windows frame the desert views, while blackout curtains ensure restful nights.
