I can’t believe how fast the last 6 weeks have flown by! Today is finally the day I get to reveal my family room makeover! Well sort of anyway. You see, I knew in the beginning when I ordered my furniture that my sofa wouldn’t make it here in time for the reveal. There are still plenty of changes to share with you and I am so happy with the result! If you would like to catch up on weeks One, Two, Three, Four, and Five please take a few minutes to do so.
Before
After
My goal was to create a space where we can still hang out (maybe just a little less than before) that is a little brighter and a bit more elegant. I believe I achieved my goal. I hope you love the results as much as I do!
Here’s the semi completed space, sans sofa. This room doesn’t challenge the limits of design, or focus on the trendiest of trends. It’s the timeless style that I hope to enjoy, and not tire of for yrs to come (or until our house sells, whichever comes first 😉 )
We removed two shelves to make room for the TV and it has a new swing mount, art and lighting were installed, shelves freshly styled, and new hardware on the cabinets!
Painting the built ins was by far my biggest challenge! I’m not sure if I’d ever try to tackle something like that again?! It was worth it in the end because the space feels so much brighter and just happier. I love that I am able to use any knick knacks I want because every thing looks great with a white back ground.
The sconces were provided by Lighting Design, I work with them on all of my local design projects and they are always awesome to work with! You can see a little peak of my art work by the talented Christie Adelle,
I am beyond blessed to be able to work with Christie! I am so excited for you all to see the art she created for my space, she used my pillows as inspiration to paint this piece. I just love how it turned out!
She named it Liberty and it couldn’t be a more perfect piece! It’s available for purchase on her site Here, you really need to check out the rest of her work! She is so talented, I want to find places in my home for all of her pieces!
The pillows are temporarily on the chairs until the sofa arrives.
My sofa and cocktail table are both made by Bernhardt ordered through Thomasville of Utah, they are another favorite vendor of mine. They are always outstanding to work with!
Details-
The side table can be found at target, this one is only sold in stores, or you can find a similar option Here or Here.
This art was provided by Minted I had been eyeing this piece for a while, I happy to find a spot for it on my shelves.
I hope you enjoyed the reveal! More coming soon in my Christmas tour!

Thank you Besa 🙂 I was dreading trying to photograph around the fact that I had no sofa, then when I looked at the photos I realized you can see the detail on the cocktail table so much better 🙂

Jen!!!! This is stunning! To be honest, I thought your family room looked great before, but now, it’s even more gorgeous! I love how you brightened it with white builtins and the additional piece above your fireplace and gorgeous new art add such a sophisticated focal point.

Thank you Jen! I am so happy that it turned out as well as it did! I always loved the gray built ins too, but I do think the white flows with the rest of my open floor plan a lot better 🙂 The art definitely takes it to another level 🙂

I thought the room was beautiful before, but it is even better/brighter with the bookcases painted white. I’ve been thinking of having my builtin modified for a television… can you share how expensive it was to have the work completed for you tv?

Hi thank you for the compliments! Your price could vary greatly depending on what you need to do and what your contractor would charge. Ours was a few hundred dollars to change the trim above the mantle and remove the shelves. My husband hung the tv. Another factor would be what your built ins are constructed out of. Ours are mdf so we called a finish carpenter. If ours were originally made by our cabinet company then we would have had to use them and it would have driven the cost up. I hope that helps a little

Thank you for sharing all of the product details. I love the new colour palette you have chosen…white is such an elegant colour for an interior and is so easy to dress up, especially with gold accents! The touch of blue throughout the room is subtle but very beautiful, just the right amount to break up the neutrality.
How do you go about mixing patterns? The area rug, throw pillows and curtains are all different colours, textures and designs, but they compliment one another so perfectly! How do you avoid clashes; do you follow any specific rules of thumb?

Hi Alexa, I do love white because it allows for so many options when designing the space. I never stay with the same colors for long, this way I can make a few small changes and the room will feel completely different. When I was working on a design board for my space I knew I wanted more color but nothing dramatic. I started with the multi colored pillow and built from there. I has several different blue and teal hues in it. The black and white Kelley Werstler pillow compliments almost any space and it ties in the little bits of black in my drapery design, as well as in my kitchen. I chose the rug to ground the space because everything else was so light and neutral, it also has just a touch of teal so it ties the pillows in perfectly. The art Christie created for the space is the one last element that pulls everything together.
I would say the biggest challenge when mixing patterns and colors would be trying to chose them all online. It’s always best to get samples whenever possible. I start with one or two colors and build on that. When it comes to pattern, I never mix patterns that are too similar. Think something with a small pattern, another with a larger pattern, and one thats solid that matches the other two but maybe has some texture. Hopefully these are a few tips you find helpful! 🙂

You are so sweet my friend! Thank you so much! I was worried that it would be a disaster but I love it so much more than I thought I would!

It was such a pretty room before, but it’s absolutely stunning now! The artwork is so beautiful! And I love the white built-ins!

Thank you Emy! I was sure people would think I was crazy to change it. I think most everyone agrees that the white is beautiful though! The art work definitely makes the space! Wait until you see the tree in here too, I’m so excited for all of the changes! 🙂
